How much to charge for bin cleaning

Bin cleaning businesses usually charge per bin, per clean, with the lowest price for customers on a regular plan. Most clean on collection day, straight after the truck has emptied the bins, so profit comes from filling each street on the route. In the US the same service is usually called trash can cleaning.

How bin cleaning businesses set their prices
Per bin, per clean
A small charge for each stop plus a price for each bin. Households with three or four bins pay their share, and the prices fit easily on a flyer.
Subscription plans
Monthly or quarterly cleans that carry on until the customer cancels. Bins on a plan stay cleaner and quicker to do, and you know each week's route in advance.
Flat price per household
One price for up to a set number of bins. It's simple to advertise, but charge for each bin over the limit or big households get a bargain.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Charging a one-off clean the same as a plan clean. A bin left for months takes longer to get clean, and a single visit doesn't fill your route. Our template charges 35% more for a one-off clean.
- Taking on customers anywhere. A single house across town on a different collection day can cost more in fuel and time than the clean earns. Set a service area, or add a travel charge outside it.
- Invoicing every clean. At these prices, chasing one late payment can wipe out the profit on the job. Take card details at sign-up and charge automatically.
- Having no rule for bins that aren't out. Decide up front whether a missed clean is still charged or moved to the next visit, and put it in your terms.

Questions
- Should I price per bin or per household?
- Per bin, plus a small fee for each visit. A house with four bins then pays more than one with a single bin, and the visit fee covers the stop. Our template uses $5 a visit and $12 a bin in the US.
- Is a quarterly plan worth offering?
- Yes, for customers who won't pay for monthly cleans. Charge a bit more per clean, since each bin has longer to get dirty. Our template adds 15% for quarterly cleans.
- Should I clean on collection day?
- If you can. The bins are empty and already at the kerb, so each clean is quick and nobody needs to be home. Group customers by collection day so each route is full.
- What minimum should I charge per visit?
- Enough to make a stop worth it. Our template won't charge less than $25 in the US, so a single bin on a one-off clean costs the minimum.
- How do I take bin cleaning sign-ups on my website?
- Put your per-bin prices into a quote form on your site. Customers choose how many bins and how often, see the price per clean and send you their address, so you can add them to the right collection-day route.
