Dog walking rates: how much to charge

Most dog walkers charge per walk, with the price set by how long the walk is and whether the dog goes out alone or in a small group. A second dog from the same home costs extra, but less than a second walk. The examples below are weekly prices for regular clients.

How dog walkers set their prices
Per walk
A set price for each walk, with more for 45 or 60 minutes than for 30. It pays you for the drive and the pick-up as well as the time on the lead. To set it, divide your hourly target by the number of walks you fit into an hour, drive included.
Weekly or monthly packages
A price for a set number of walks each week, paid weekly or monthly in advance. You can plan your route and your income, and clients don't have to book each walk.
Group walks
A lower price per dog for walking a few dogs together, which still earns you more per hour than solo walks. Our template takes 20% off for a small group walk. Check whether your council or the parks you use limit how many dogs one person can walk.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Charging weekday rates on weekends and public holidays. Those walks use up the days you'd otherwise have off. Our template adds 15% to the weekly price when weekend walks are included.
- Having no cancellation cut-off. A walk cancelled that morning leaves a gap you can't fill. Charge in full for walks cancelled after a set time, like 6 pm the day before.
- Letting 30-minute walks turn into 45. Ten extra minutes on every walk adds up to hours a week you aren't paid for. Keep to the booked time, or move the client to a longer walk.
- Pricing short puppy visits by the minute. A 15-minute toilet break needs the same drive as a full walk, so price it close to your 30-minute walk.
- Keeping your first clients on your starting rate for years. Raise prices once a year for everyone, and give a month's notice.

Questions
- Should I charge per walk or per hour?
- Per walk suits most walkers, because every walk comes with a drive and a pick-up that an hourly rate doesn't cover. Set prices for 30, 45 and 60 minutes, and keep an hourly rate for long hikes or time spent at the client's home.
- How much more should I charge for a second dog?
- Walkers usually add a set amount or a percentage for each extra dog, well below the price of a second walk, because it's still one trip. Our template adds 40% for two dogs and 75% for three dogs from the same home.
- How much should I charge for a 60-minute walk?
- Less than double your 30-minute price, since the drive and the pick-up take the same time however long the walk is. Our template charges 30% more for 45 minutes and 60% more for 60 minutes.
- Should I charge extra for clients outside my area?
- Build normal travel into your walk price and set a service area. For clients outside it, add a travel charge per walk, or offer them a spot on a group walk that already passes nearby.
- How do I put my dog walking rates on my website?
- Add a quote form with your rates. Clients pick their walks for the week and see the weekly price before they contact you. You still meet the dog before the first walk.
