How much to charge for lawn mowing

Most lawn care businesses charge a set price per mow based on the size of the lawn, with a better rate for customers on a regular schedule. Edging, taking clippings away and hedge trimming are usually priced as extras.

How lawn care businesses set their prices
By lawn size
Set prices for small, medium and large lawns, or a rate per square foot on big properties. Customers know what they'll pay, and you can quote from a satellite view.
By the hour
An hourly rate per person. It suits overgrown lawns, steep blocks and first visits, where the time is hard to predict.
Seasonal contracts
A fixed monthly or seasonal price for regular mowing. It evens out your income, but set out how many visits it covers.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Pricing one-off mows like regular ones. A lawn that hasn't been cut for weeks can take twice as long. Our template charges 40% more for a one-off mow.
- Forgetting travel time. A minimum price per visit covers the drive to small lawns.
- Throwing in extras for free. Edging, blowing paths and taking clippings away add time to every visit. Price them separately or build them into a package.
- Keeping the same prices every season. Fuel and equipment costs go up, so review your prices before spring.

Questions
- How do I price a lawn I haven't seen?
- Check the size on a satellite map and ask for a photo. Quote from your size bands, and say that very overgrown lawns cost more on the first visit.
- Should weekly customers pay less than fortnightly ones?
- Usually, per mow. A lawn cut every week is shorter and quicker to mow. Our template charges 15% more per visit for mowing every 2 weeks.
- Should I charge by the square foot?
- It works for large properties and commercial sites. For most homes, three or four size bands are easier for customers to understand.
- How do I put my lawn mowing prices online?
