How much to charge for solar panel cleaning

Solar panel cleaners mostly charge per panel, with a higher rate for panels on second-storey or steep roofs and a minimum call-out that covers small systems. Customers who book regular cleans, often twice a year, get a lower price per visit.

How solar panel cleaners set their prices
Per panel
A price for each panel. Customers can count them or look them up in their solar paperwork, so they can see how you got to the price.
Per system
A flat price for a typical home system, capped at a number of panels. It's simple to sell, but without that cap a 40-panel roof goes out at the same price as a 12-panel one.
Cleaning plans
A lower price per visit for customers who book two or more cleans a year. You get repeat work that you can group into routes by area.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Going out for small systems at the per-panel rate. A 10-panel system takes the same drive and setup as a big one. In the US our template never goes under $100, which is what the 12-panel example comes to.
- Charging second-storey panels at the single-storey rate. Taller roofs mean longer ladders or poles and slower work. Second-storey panels cost 25% more on our template.
- Giving away too much on plans. A customer on two cleans a year still needs the full setup each time. The twice-a-year option on our template is 15% cheaper per visit.
- Ignoring bird mess and nests. Droppings baked onto the glass take longer to shift, and birds nesting under the panels are a separate job. Quote bird proofing on its own.

Questions
- Should I charge per panel or per job?
- Per panel, with a minimum. It's easy to explain, and the minimum makes sure small systems still cover your setup and travel.
- Should large arrays get a lower rate per panel?
- Often, yes. Your setup and travel are spread over more panels, so you can take a little off the rate above a set number. Quote commercial and ground-mounted arrays after a look.
- How do I price a system I can't see from the ground?
- Ask the customer how many panels they have and look at the roof on a satellite map. Confirm the count when you arrive, before you start.
- How often should customers book a clean?
- It depends on dust, birds, nearby trees and rain where they live. Offer twice a year as a plan, and let customers in dusty areas book more often.
- How do I put solar panel cleaning prices on my website?
- Make the panel count the first question on a quote form. Customers type in how many panels they have and the roof height, and the price updates as they go.
