How much to charge for pool cleaning

Pool service companies charge either per visit or a flat monthly rate for weekly service, set by the size of the pool. Chemicals are included or billed on top, and one-off jobs like green pool clean-ups are priced separately.

How pool service companies set their prices
Flat monthly rate
One price each month for weekly service. Customers can budget for it, but say exactly what it covers, such as brushing, skimming, emptying baskets and a normal amount of chemicals.
Per visit
A price for each service, by pool size. It suits fortnightly customers and holiday homes, and it's the simplest price to show on a form.
Service plus chemicals
A service price with chemicals billed on top, either at cost plus a margin or as a flat amount per visit. It protects you in stormy or hot weeks, when the chemical bill jumps.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Charging fortnightly visits at the weekly rate. A pool left for two weeks collects more leaves and takes more work to get the water right. Our template charges 20% more per visit for every 2 weeks.
- Including chemicals with no limit. A new customer's pool, or one after a storm, can go through far more than usual. Our template adds $20 a visit in the US for chemicals, so bill big top-ups separately.
- Pricing a green pool like a normal clean. Bringing one back can take several visits and a lot of chemicals. Green pool recovery adds $250 in the US on our template.
- Fixing equipment inside the service price. Replacing a pump seal or chasing a leak is repair work, not cleaning. Quote it separately, by the hour or as a set price.

Questions
- Should I charge per visit or per month?
- Monthly suits weekly customers, because it averages out the months with five visits. Per visit suits fortnightly and occasional customers.
- How much more should a one-off clean cost?
- More than a regular visit, because you don't know the pool and it's usually dirtier. A one-off clean costs 60% more than a weekly visit on our template.
- Should chemicals be included in my price?
- Including them keeps the price simple, but you carry the cost when a pool needs extra. One middle ground is to include normal balancing and charge for large doses or special products.
- How do I price a pool I haven't seen?
- Ask for a photo of the water and one of the pump and filter. Price the visit from the pool size, and tell the customer that green or cloudy water needs a clean-up first, at a separate price.
- How do I put pool service prices on my website?
- Your pool sizes, visit options and extras make a short quote form. Customers see a price per visit and can send their address to start service.
