How much to charge for dog grooming

Most groomers start with a price for each size of dog and charge more for long or matted coats, since the coat decides how long a groom takes. Extras like nail trims and de-shedding are usually priced on their own.

How dog groomers set their prices
By size and coat
A price for small, medium, large and extra-large dogs, with a percentage added for longer or thicker coats. It covers every breed without a long list, and owners can work out their own price.
By breed
A price for each breed you groom, such as a Maltese or a golden retriever. Owners find their dog quickly, but the list gets long and mixed breeds don't fit it neatly.
By the hour
An hourly rate for de-matting and for dogs that need a second person to hold them. It protects you on first grooms of neglected coats. Quote the owner a range at drop-off.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Pricing by size alone. A poodle cross and a beagle of the same weight can take very different times on the table. Our template adds 15% for a medium coat and 30% for a long or double coat.
- Charging the usual price when a regular comes in overdue. A coat that has grown for 12 weeks takes longer than a 6-week tidy-up. Charge more for overdue coats, or give a better price to owners who keep to a schedule.
- Pricing a difficult dog like any other. A dog that bites or panics may need a second person and a slower groom. Add a handling charge, or tell the owner you can't take the dog.
- Not charging for no-shows. An empty slot on the day is hard to fill. Take a deposit when people book, or charge a fee for missed appointments.

Questions
- Should I charge by breed or by size?
- Size with a coat adjustment covers most dogs and is easy to show on a form. A breed list works for the breeds you see every week, but you'll still need a rule for crosses and dogs that are big for their breed.
- How much extra should I charge for a matted dog?
- Many groomers charge for de-matting by the time it takes, or add a set percentage. Our template adds 50% for a matted coat. If the coat needs shaving off, tell the owner before you start.
- Should nail trims be included in a full groom?
- A basic nail clip is often part of a full groom, with a separate charge for nail-only visits or grinding. Our template lists nail trims as an extra, so change that if yours are included.
- Should mobile grooming cost more than a salon?
- Usually, yes. You groom fewer dogs a day from a van and carry its running costs, so price each groom higher and set a minimum for each stop.
- How do I put my grooming prices on my website?
- Put them in a quote form. Owners pick their dog's size and coat, add any extras and see a price before they book. You can still change it once the dog is on the table.
