How much to charge for dog training

Dog trainers usually charge per private lesson and sell lessons in packages, while group classes are priced per dog for the whole course. Behaviour cases cost more, because the sessions run longer and need planning and follow-up between visits.

How dog trainers set their prices
Private lessons
A price per session, usually an hour, at your training ground or the client's home. It suits one-off problems and owners who want to try you before they commit.
Packages
Several private lessons sold together and paid up front, like a four-lesson puppy course. Clients stay long enough to see results, and you can fill your diary weeks ahead. Put an expiry date on unused lessons.
Group classes
A price per dog for a course of weekly classes. Each owner pays less than for private lessons, and you teach several dogs in the same hour.
Behaviour consultations
A longer first visit for problems like reactivity or anxiety, ending with a written plan. Many trainers follow it with a package of sessions to work through the plan.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Selling single lessons only. Clients who pay for one lesson at a time tend to stop before the dog is trained. Offer a package as the main option and the single lesson as the exception.
- Driving to clients' homes for free. A home visit can add an hour of driving to a one-hour lesson. Charge a travel fee, and set a radius you'll travel within.
- Answering messages for free between sessions. Video reviews and phone calls can add up to hours a week. Include a set amount of support in each package and charge for more.
- Charging nothing for a second dog. With two dogs in one lesson, you teach two sets of exercises and each dog gets less of your time. Our template adds 50% for a second dog.

- Price the package a little below the same number of single lessons, so paying up front feels worth it. Our template charges $320 in the US for puppy basics, a set of four private lessons, and $90 for a single lesson.
- How much more should I charge for reactive or anxious dogs?
- Price in the extra time. Sessions with a reactive dog often run longer and take more planning. Our template adds 25% for a reactive or anxious dog, on top of the lesson or package price.
- Should I offer a free first consultation?
- A short free phone call helps you check the dog is a good fit. Charge for anything longer or in person, because that's where the training starts.
- Should I list my training prices online?
- Yes, if you want fewer messages asking what you charge. A quote form lets owners choose a lesson, package or class, add a second dog or a home visit, and see the price before they get in touch.
