How much to charge for web design
Updated 26 September 2026
Most web designers quote a fixed price per project, built from a starting fee, the number of pages and the features the site needs. Custom design and online stores add the most. Hourly rates are usually kept for changes after the site goes live.

How web designers and agencies set their prices
Fixed project price
One price for an agreed scope: the pages, the features, a set number of revision rounds and the launch. Clients can budget for it, and working quickly pays off for you. Put the scope in writing so extra requests are clearly extra.
Starting fee plus pages and features
A starting fee, a rate per page and a set price for each feature, like a store or online booking. It's quick to quote on a call or through a form. Our template works this way, with an $800 starting fee and $150 a page in the US.
Hourly or day rate
A rate for your time, used for small edits and for fixing sites someone else built. Clients find it hard to budget for, so estimate the hours and agree a cap.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Offering unlimited revisions. Without a limit, a project can drag on for months at the same price. Include two rounds of changes and charge for more by the hour.
- Starting before the content is ready. Waiting weeks for text and photos stalls the build. Set a date for the client's content, or quote to write it yourself.
- Charging custom design at template prices. Designing from scratch means more drafts and more meetings before anything gets built. Our template charges 50% more for a fully custom design.
- Treating an online store as a few extra pages. Loading products and testing payments take far longer. Price the store as its own feature.

Questions
- Should I charge hourly or a fixed price for a website?
- A fixed price for the build, because clients want to know the total, and you earn more per hour as you get faster. Charge hourly for anything the client adds after you've agreed the scope.
- How much more should I charge for a rush job?
- Enough to cover pushing other clients back or working late. Our template adds 25% for rush delivery.
- How much should I take up front?
- Many designers take half before starting and the rest before launch. On bigger projects, split the payments across stages, such as when the client signs off the design.
- Should I charge a monthly fee after launch?
- If you host the site or keep it updated, yes. A monthly plan with a set amount of edit time is easier to run than lots of small invoices.
- How do I show website prices on my own site?
- Put your prices into a quote form, with each feature as an option clients can tick. They see a price range before they get in touch. Our template shows a range from 10% below to 20% above the estimate, leaving room for details you find out later.
