How much to charge for tutoring

Most tutors charge per session, with the price set by how long the session runs and the student's level. Many families book a regular weekly slot, so the examples below show the price per week. Online lessons are sometimes a little cheaper, since there's no travel.

How tutors and tutoring centres set their prices
Per session
A price for each session, set separately for each length you offer. Parents find it simple to follow, and it works for a one-off before an exam as well as for regular students.
Weekly or termly packages
A price for a set number of sessions a week or a term, paid in advance. You get steadier income and fewer skipped weeks, and families get a small saving. Our template charges a little less per session when a student comes three times a week.
Small groups
A price per student for a small group taught together. Each family pays less than for one-to-one lessons, and you earn more for the hour. Set a minimum group size so the session still pays if someone drops out.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Using one rate for every level. Senior and university subjects take more preparation and deeper knowledge. Our template adds 15% for high school and 35% for university students.
- Letting late cancellations go unpaid. A session cancelled an hour before is time you can't fill. Set a notice period, such as 24 hours, and charge in full inside it.
- Leaving preparation and marking out of the price. The hour on the timetable isn't the only hour you work. Build planning time into your session rate.
- Collecting payment after every lesson. Chasing small amounts each week wastes time and invites late payers. Take payment in advance, by the week or by the term.

- How much should I charge for tutoring?
- Start from the income you need, and allow for preparation, travel and gaps between students. Then check what tutors near you charge for the same level. Our template's US prices are $45, $60 and $85 for 45, 60 and 90-minute primary school sessions.
- Should I charge per hour or per session?
- Per session is clearer when your lessons have set lengths. Price each length on its own, so 90 minutes doesn't have to cost exactly one and a half hours.
- Should online tutoring cost less?
- Some tutors charge a little less, because there's no travel. The teaching is the same, so keep the gap small. Our template takes 10% off online sessions.
- How do I put my tutoring prices on my website?
- Add a quote form that asks for session length, sessions a week, the student's level and whether lessons are online. Parents see a weekly price and send you a request, and you get back to them to book a first session.
