How much to charge for handyman services

Most handymen charge by the hour, with a call-out fee or minimum so short jobs still pay. Jobs you do every week, like mounting a TV, are often sold at a set price. Materials are either the customer's or bought by you and charged back.

How handymen set their prices
Hourly plus a call-out fee
A fee for turning up, then an hourly rate. It's fair on repairs you can't judge until you start, like a door that won't close properly. Our template charges a $50 call-out fee plus $85 an hour in the US.
Set price per task
A fixed price for jobs you know well, like hanging a door or putting up a TV bracket. Customers see the price before they book, and you earn more as you get quicker. Only offer it for jobs you've timed many times.
Half-day or full-day rates
A set price for a block of time, for customers with a list of small jobs. It fills your diary and saves driving between short visits.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Having no call-out fee. A 20-minute job can cost you an hour once you count the drive and parking. Charge a call-out fee or a one-hour minimum.
- Not charging for trips to buy materials. Choosing parts, queueing at the hardware store and returning the wrong ones all take time. Mark up the materials or bill the time.
- Doing extra jobs for free. 'While you're here' requests add up over a day. Agree a price for each one before you start it.
- Giving a fixed price for work you can't see. A rotten door frame or a crumbling wall can double the job. Quote a range, or price the first hour and confirm the rest once it's opened up.
- Charging your normal rate for urgent work. Same-day jobs push other customers back and often run into the evening. Our template adds 25% for jobs within 24 hours.

- Ask for photos or a short video, plus the brand and model of anything you're fitting. Quote a range of hours, and confirm the price before you start work.
