How much to charge for fence installation

Fencing contractors mostly price by the linear foot or metre, with the rate set by the material and the height. Gates are priced each and removing the old fence is an extra. Rocky or sloping ground is usually checked on site before the price is final.

How fencing contractors set their prices
Per linear foot or metre
A rate for each foot or metre of fence, set by material and height. Customers can measure the run themselves, which makes it easy to quote from a sketch or a satellite map.
Per panel
A price per panel and post, for fences built from standard panels. It matches how you buy materials. Put the total length on the quote as well, because that's the number customers compare.
Materials plus labour
Add up posts, rails, pickets, concrete and hardware, then your labour days and margin. It's the best method for custom designs and sloping sites, and a good check on your per-foot rates.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Using one rate for every material. Vinyl and aluminium usually cost more than timber, and chain link less. Our template takes 30% off for chain link and adds 30% for vinyl and 60% for aluminium.
- Forgetting the old fence. Pulling posts, breaking out old footings and paying tip fees all cost you. Our template adds 15% when the old fence comes out.
- Underpricing gates. A gate needs stronger posts, hinges, a latch and careful hanging. Our template charges $350 per gate in the US.
- Quoting before you've seen the ground. Rock, roots and slopes slow down every post hole. Quote from a map if you like, but confirm the price after a site check.
- Charging short runs at your full per-foot rate. Twenty feet of fence still means a trip, digging and concrete. Our template won't price a fence below $1,000 in the US.
