How much to charge for snow removal

Snow removal is sold two ways: a price per visit based on driveway size, or a seasonal contract that covers every snowfall for one price. Walkways, steps and salting are extras, and many contracts only bring you out once the snow reaches a set depth.

How snow removal companies set their prices
Per visit or per push
A price each time you clear the driveway, by its size. Customers only pay when it snows and you earn more in a heavy winter, but your income is hard to predict.
Seasonal contracts
One price for the whole winter, paid up front or in instalments, however often it snows. You get steady income but carry the risk of a big season, so some businesses cap the number of visits.
By the hour
An hourly rate for the machine and operator. It suits car parks and commercial sites, where the time depends on the layout and how much snow falls.

Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Selling seasonal contracts with no limit. A heavy winter can bring far more visits than you planned for. Cap the visits in the contract, or charge per visit above the cap.
- Not setting a trigger depth. Without one, customers expect you out for a light dusting. Pick the depth that sends the truck out, such as 2 inches or 5 cm, and write it into the agreement.
- Giving salt away. De-icing products cost money, and spreading them is another pass on every visit. Our template adds $15 per visit in the US for salting.
- Discounting contract customers too far. They expect you early after every snowfall, even when your route is full. Our template takes 15% off each visit for a seasonal contract.
- Forgetting the minimum. A short driveway still means a stop, a turnaround and the drive to the next job. Our template charges at least $40 a visit in the US.

Questions
- Should I charge per push or a seasonal rate?
- Offer both. Per push suits customers who only want you after big falls, and seasonal contracts give you income you can count on. Price the seasonal rate from the visits in an average winter.
- How much should I add for walkways and steps?
- Price them as their own extra, since steps and paths are usually shovelled by hand. Our template adds $15 per visit in the US for walkways and steps.
- Should I charge more for deep snow?
- Some contracts charge extra once snow passes a second depth, because deep snow takes longer to move and can need more than one pass. Write both depths and the extra charge into the agreement.
- How do I put snow removal prices on my website?
- List your driveway sizes, extras and plans on a quote form. Customers can switch between paying per visit and a seasonal contract to compare, then send their address before the first snow.
