How much to charge for junk removal

Junk removal companies price most jobs by how much of the truck they fill, from a few items up to a full load. Heavy items, stairs and same-day pickups are added on top. Soil and bricks are priced differently, because they get heavy long before the truck is full.

How junk removal companies set their prices
By truck volume
Set prices for an eighth, a quarter, a half, three quarters and a full truck. Customers can picture it, and you can check it by eye as you load. In our template, the smallest load is also the minimum charge.
Per item
A set price for single items like a sofa, a mattress or a fridge. It's simple for small pickups, but move to volume pricing once a job has more than a few pieces.
By weight
For soil, bricks, roof tiles and building waste, which reach the truck's weight limit before it's full. Charge by the tonne, or pass on the tip fee and add your labour.

How much to haul it away?
Pricing mistakes to avoid
- Pricing heavy loads by volume. A quarter truck of soil or bricks can weigh more than a full truck of furniture, and many tips charge by weight. Price heavy material separately.
- Swallowing special disposal fees. Mattresses, tyres, paint and fridges can cost extra to get rid of. Find out what your local tip charges and add it to the quote.
- Carrying things down stairs for free. Stairs and long walks to the truck slow every trip. Our template adds $50 in the US when items come down stairs or in a lift.
- Letting the load grow on the day. 'Can you take this too?' adds up fast. Price extra items from your load sizes before they go on the truck.
- Fitting in same-day jobs at the normal price. They break up your route and can mean an extra tip run. Our template charges $50 extra for same-day pickup in the US.

Questions
- How do I price junk removal?
- Estimate how much of the truck the job will fill, then add heavy items, difficult access and any special tip fees. Tell the customer which load size you've priced, so the final bill makes sense to them.
- Should I charge by volume or by weight?
- By volume for household junk and furniture, which fills the truck before it gets heavy. By weight, or the tip fee plus labour, for soil and building waste.
- What should I charge for a single item?
- At least your smallest load price, since the drive and the tip run cost the same. Our template charges $120 in the US for a few items, plus $35 for each heavy one like a fridge.
- Can I give a price from photos?
- Yes, as a range. Ask for photos of everything that's going, with something in the shot for scale, and whether it's upstairs. Confirm the price on the day once you've seen it all.
- How do I put junk removal prices on my website?
